Can I write my backups to a Windows filesystem?

When I try to write my backups to a Windows Samba share, my Windows system returns an error regarding the filename. How can I write my backups to a Windows disk?

ANSWER

In general, SBAdmin does not support writing backups to Windows disk filesystems. This is due to the fact that SBAdmin uses colons “:” in the filenames of the backup files, and Windows filesystems do not allow this character in filenames.

You will need to install “Services for Unix” on the Windows system and translate the colon character to a Windows allowable character (i.e. underscore “_”).

Another feature provided by SFU 3.5 is NFS, which will allow you to mount your Windows share using NFS as opposed to Samba.
