All rights reserved ****************************************** * STORIX SYSTEM BACKUP ADMINISTRATOR * * ------------------------------------ * * INSTALLATION AND UPDATE INSTRUCTIONS * * Last updated: Apr 10, 2015 * ****************************************** COPYRIGHT AND TRADEMARKS ------------------------ After installing the software using the instructions below, refer to the files in the /opt/storix/docs (Linux/Solaris) or /usr/lpp/storix/docs (AIX) directories for specific permission and restrictions on use, duplication or distribution of software included in this package. DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING FROM THE WEB SITE -------------------------------------------- 1. Select the software package you wish to download from the web site based on your operating system type and machine type. The downloaded file name will contain the operating system and machine type (i.e. "storix_linux_i386.tar"). You should select to save the file in the /tmp directory on your AIX/Linux/Solaris system. NOTE: Be sure to download the file in BINARY. Some browsers will recognize the ".tar" extension of the file and ask you if it should open the file or expand it. You should NOT open it, but select to save it to disk instead. 2. Change to the /tmp directory: cd /tmp 3. Extract the contents of the file: tar -xvf IMAGEFILE.tar (where IMAGEFILE.tar is the name of the downloaded file) 4. Run the installation program and follow the instructions provided: ./stinstall INSTALLING FROM CDROM --------------------- 1. Mount the cdrom: - Linux systems: mount -r /dev/cdrom /mnt (replace "cdrom" with your CDROM device if needed) - Solaris systems: mount -F hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /mt (replace "c1t0d0s0" with your CDROM device if needed) - AIX systems: mount -v cdrfs -r /dev/cd0 /mnt (replace "cd0" with your CDROM device if needed) 2. Run the installation program and follow the instructions provided: /mnt/stinstall LICENSE OPTIONS --------------- When installing the software, you will be asked for one of the following license types to install and configure. Note that options below with an (*) require a software license, but may also be installed for the free 30-day evaluation period. STORIX WORKSTATION EDITION (*) - Use this option if you want all of the advanced backup and media management features for use only on the local system. When choosing this option, no network backup, client or server options are provided. STORIX NETWORK EDITION (*) - Use this option if you want to use this system to schedule, perform and monitor backups of this and other systems on the network. All Workstation Edition features are available to the clients and servers configured under this license. STORIX TSM EDITION (*) - Use this option if you want to use this system to schedule, perform and monitor only System backups of this and other clients (nodes) to a TSM (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager) server. Unlimited number of TSM servers may be configured, and TSM nodes are configured with Client License as described below. STORIX CLIENT/SERVER - Use this option if this system is either a client to be backed up or a server which this or other clients will send backups to. No license key is required, as this option provides no local graphical interface, but backups are managed using the administrator system onto which the Network Edition or TSM Edition is installed. LICENSE KEYS ------------ A license key is required if you selected to install the Network Edition, Workstation Edition or TSM Edition license option. A single license key must be used only on the specific system for which it is purchased. An additional license key will be required if you are installing the optional Backup Data Encryption Feature and/or the TSM Client Support for Network Edition (see ENABLING OPTIONAL LICENSED FEATURES). See EVALUATION SOFTWARE below if you are configuring the software for the 30-day free evaluation period! If you purchased the product from our website at http://www.storix.com, you should have received an email with a link pointing you to the page where you can register your software. Upon registring the software, you will be provided a license key which will permanently activate your software and any optional features. ENABLING OPTIONAL LICENSED FEATURES ----------------------------------- If you purchased one of the optional licensed fetaures: Backup Data Encryption TSM Client/Server Support an additional license key will be provided to you. This license is not used during the initial software installation, but is added to the configuration after starting the SBAdmin interface. To enable an optional feature, select File->Preferences->Software License from the SBAdmin user interface (see STARTING BACKUP ADMINISTRATOR). From this screen, you can select the Optional Feature you want to install and select "Permanent license". Enter your license key in the field provided and press Save. See EVALUATION SOFTWARE below to configure optional features for the 30-day free evaluation period! Optional features which may be applied to specific client systems (i.e. Backup Data Encryption or TSM Integration) are enabled using the SBAdmin interface on the Network Administrator. Select Configure->Clients, select the client to change, and press the button corresponding to the feature you wish to enable for that client. The number of clients for which an optional feature is enabled will be limited by the license key installed for that feature. EVALUATION SOFTWARE ------------------- No license is required when installing the evaluation version of the Network Edition, TSM Edition, or Workstation Edition of SBAdmin. When using the Network or TSM Edition, no license is required for a Client/Server license. In each case, you may configure the software for a 30-DAY FREE TRIAL one time only. You may also use the optional Backup Data Encryption Feature, and/or the TSM Integration Feature (Network Edition only) for a 30-day free trial. In this case, you must install the software using the information in the previous paragraph. Then, after starting the SBAdmin user interface, (see STARTING THE BACKUP ADMINISTRATOR) select File->Preferences->Software License. From this screen, you can select the Optional Feature you want to install and select "30-day free evaluation". Then, press Save. You will not be required to enter a trial license key. STARTING THE BACKUP ADMINISTRATOR --------------------------------- For the Client/Server license, the software will be automatically started in the background upon installation and also when the system is rebooted. For the Workstation Edition, Network Edition and TSM Edition options: To use Xwindows GUI: 1. Start Xwindows if not already started using the appropriate command for your graphical desktop (i.e. "startx"); 2. Type "sbadmin &" from an xterm window. To use Web Interface: 1. The appropriate link to the interface will be provided at the end of the software installation process. APPLYING UPDATES ---------------- To update the software when connected to the internet, you can automatically check, download and apply updates directly from the Storix website by selecting from the user interface: Help-> Download Software Updates You will have an option of checking for updates only and/or downloading and installing updates. If the system is a Network Edition or TSM Edition, you will have an additional option of automatically applying updates to configured clients. If the system cannot contact the Storix website directly, you may apply updates by re-installing the software using the same instructions used to initially install the software (shown above). NOTE! Re-installing the software will replace existing program files, but WILL NOT OVERWRITE current configuration or history files. Note that if you have enabled any optional licensed features, the updates will be applied to all features, and no additional steps are needed. GETTING HELP ------------ A. From the graphical user interface: From the "sbadmin" interface, select "Help->User Guides" from the main menu to display a list of available user guides. You can also press the right-mouse button over any BUTTON, LISTBOX or ENTRY field for detailed information on the use of that selection. NOTE: The user guide will be displayed using a PDF viewer installed on your system. For AIX installs, the "xpdf" viewer will be installed and used by default. For Linux, either Acrobat Reader or Xpdf must be installed from your distribution. You may also choose to use a different viewer by setting the VIEWER environment variable to the name of the viewer BEFORE starting the "sbadmin" interface. B. From the web interface: If roll-over help messages are enabled (default), detailed information about each form field and button is available when hovering over that item for a few seconds. The user guides are also available by selecting "Help->User Guides" and the files will be retrieved from the Storix website. B. When re-installing a system from a System Backup: From any System Installation screen, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move to any entry field, then press F1 for instructions on that option.
