This feature can be used to backup data from any system which uses the SMB protocol. This can include MS Windows, Mac OS X, or another UNIX system running an SMB server.
A Windows system, for instance, uses SMB for remote communications, and SBAdmin can backup data from any Windows system that has created SMB shares, or "shared folders".
Rather than communicating directly with the SMB clients, the SMB data is temporarily mounted onto a Linux SMB host, and backed up using the standard SBadmin network communications. The SMB client is configured into the SBAdmin interface just like any other Linux or AIX client, except that you assign each client an SMB host and any necessary userid or password.
The SMB client data is then backed up in the same fashion as all other SBAdmin backup jobs, providing the use of include or exclude lists, selective file or directory restores, etc. Note, however, that the SBAdmin Full System Backup and Disaster Recovery feature is not available for SMB clients, since only data within SMB shares, and not entire systems are backed up.
Data backed up from an SMB client may also be restored to a Linux or AIX filesystem and vice-versa, providing a means of transferring files between systems.
