You can be sure your tapes are never overwritten before their time by applying a global retention period to all tape backups, or setting a retention period for each backup job. Backups may be automatically expired and overwriiten only after the expiration date, else may be manually expired.
For disk backups, any number of backups may be written to the same directory, even when repeatedly running the same backup job. The retention period for disk backups allows you to manage the disk space by automatically expiring and removing all backups (of the same job) after they have reached their expiration date. This means you can replace older backups with newer backups of the same data, while still retaining 1 or more copies.
