When it comes time to replace your AIX or Linux system, whether by choice or necessity, can you restore your "bare-metal" backup to the new hardware? Looking to move a physical machine to VMware, Xen, or an AIX LPAR?
Most BMR solutions are really just a "disk image" backup. This inflexible backup can be restored only onto the same type system, adapters, disk sizes and locations. This isn't of much help if your intent is to upgrade your hardware, if a replacement machine differs from the original, or if you need to move from a physical machine to a virtual machine.
SBAdmin, on the other hand, provides Adaptable System Recovery (ASR) , with the unique ability to record your AIX or Linux system configuration the backup, compare that with your newly detected hardware configuration, and adapt to the change! In many cases, no help is needed on your part, but if the old backup won't fit onto the new hardware, you'll be given specific details on the issues involved, and helpful instructions on how to resolve the problem.
Hardware Migration
Using SBAdmin's System Recovery Interface, you can do anything necessary to migrate from the old to new hardware, such as:
- Move data between disks
- Remove or reduce disk partitions
- Reduce filesystems to free unneeded space
- Load new SCSI or network device modules
- Alter mirroring or striping to reduce the number
of required disks
Physical to Virtual Machine Migration
With the flexibility of SBAdmin's system installation process, you can even make a backup of your physical system and restore it to a virtual machine, whether a VMware partition or Xen virtual machines on Linux or an AIX LPAR. You can also migrate from a virtual machine to a physical machine, while reconfiguring the storage for the best system performance and availability.
The simple menus will guide you through the process, and provide all the help you need. SBAdmin will verify when the configuration is sufficient to begin the install, and away you go!
While you're at it, why not migrate the software storage configuration to enhance your data availability and performance!
