How many times have you inserted the AIX or Linux CDROMs into the drive, one after the other (and there are a lot of them) in order to install a system? Then, after doing so, you configured each system with the same filesystems, installed applications, update, user accounts, shared directories, and more. If you have to repeat the same task the same way over and over, there must be an easier way.
So why not create a backup of a system that's fully configured, and replicate that system onto others?
- Because each system has different hardware?
- Because you don't want to replicate the network configuration
(and bring down your network)?
- Because the new systems are remote and moving the tapes is
too much trouble?
Sounds like you really need SBAdmin! Not only can SBAdmin install a new identical system, but allows you to migrate to different hardware. It will either replace or remove the network configuration to avoid harmful conflicts, and you can both boot and restore new systems over the network!
OK, so you have a rack of systems that share a single console and keyboard. Well, SBAdmin will also let you configure your network install as no-prompt. In this case, you just boot the client system over the network and it's installed and ready to run in no time! SBAdmin will even reconfigure the network settings of the new client so it's available on the network as soon as it reboots.
