Performing a backup in stages allows a backup to be completed more quickly by backing up to the fastest possible media. This is often a disk-to-disk backup (D2D). Storing backups for a long period of time on local or SAN-attached disks can require considerable resource, so it's usually desirable to offload the disk backups to a more permanent (and usually slower) backup media after the backup is complete.

SBAdmin provides not only the ability to copy a backup residing on disk to tape, but can copy backups from any SBAdmin backup media (local or remote) to any other SBAdmin backup media (also local or remote).
This means you can:
Copy any disk backup on any server to a disk on any other server (D2D2D)
Copy any disk backup on any server to tape on any other server (D2D2T)
Copy any tape backup on any server to tape on any other server (D2T2T)
Copy any tape backup on any server to disk on any other server (D2T2D)
